Season preview 1913-14: Sunderland F.C. (The Athletic News)

August 25, 1913
Sunderland, the League champions, have probably made fewer changes in the personnel of their team than in any other year of the club’s history. The reason of this will be easily understood when it is borne in mind what the players accomplished last season.

As a matter of fact, only one member of the League team has gone elsewhere, and that is Tom Hall, the centre forward, who was transferred to Newcastle United last May. During the season Walter Scott (goalkeeper) went to Shelbourne and Fred Martin (forward) was transferred to the Raith Rovers, whilst at the close of the campaign John Morrison (half back) joined Jarrow and Bob McCullough (forward) signed an amateur form for South Shields.

John Hastings (back) has retired from the game, leaving G. Hollender (back), Jack Small (half-back), and E. Hodgkinson to be accounted for. A few days ago Small (who refused an offer of £3 a week to re-sign) went to Southampton, and Hodgkinson has not yet fixed up.

The new professionals engaged number four, namely: – Joseph C. Lane, centre forward, of Watford, who has just finished two seasons at Budapest; John McKenzie, centre half-back, of Dunfermline; Charles Danskin, outside left forward, of the Ashington Club, Northumberland; and Richard Cushlow, inside left forward, of Horden Athletic.

Including these players the club have now 25 professionals on their list, which is one more than a year ago, and there are, in addition, half a dozen amateurs who have again offered their services when required. The six amateurs are: Leslie Scott, goalkeeper; A.E. Battell, back; A. Hickford and J. O’Kane, half-backs; and W.G.B. Moore and Dick Healey, forwards. Scott and Battell are local men, Hickford resides at Leadgate, O’Kane at Gateshead, Moore at Seaton Delsval, and Healey at Darlington.

The directors arranged to hold only one full practice of the regular players, and this took place on Wednesday last. There will, however, be a trial for local players on Wednesday next, when it is anticipated that several promising juniors will be on view.

The huge income of last season enabled the club to clear off the mortgage on the Roker Park ground, and it is now their own property. The next step was to increase the accommodation, which is now being done. A considerable portion of the old wooden stands have been removed, and these will be replaced by a huge ferro-concrete stand, capable of holding from 30,000 to 35,000 spectators, bringing the holding capacity of the ground up to 55,000. It is hoped to have the stand ready for occupation on September 6, when Newcastle United will be the visitors.

During the first month of the season Sunderland will be without their captain C. Thomson, owing to his suspension. This will be a severe handicap to start with, especially in view of the fact that their September programme is probably the heaviest in the division.
