Season preview 1927/28: St. Johnstone F.C. (Athletic News)

August 1, 1927
On the whole, St. Johnstone have done better than was expected in the First Division, and the players they have engaged or re-engaged should keep the Perth club out of the danger zone. John Whyte and Tommy McLean went to Blackburn in the spring, David McClure is with Nelson, and Dick with Hamilton Academical; while Kirby, Pocock, and Toner have apparently drifted out of the team as quietly as they came to it.

From Page, the goalkeeper, Penman and Jamieson, the backs, and Swallow, Lockhead, McBain, and Lafferty, the half-backs – all seven retained men – a strong defence should be found, and good juniors have been recruited for practically all positions, the reserve goalkeeper being a Perth boy, A. McLaren, who will play as an amateur.

It is the attack that causes St. Johnstone any anxiety that exists, but it is hoped that Gavigan, a returned Anglo-Scot, and Laurie McBain, the ex-Queen’s parker, will strike up a sound partnership. Munro is back from Canada, an improved centre-forward, and there are several candidates for the left wing. St. Johnstone open with a home match against Hamilton Academical, and this gives them practically a week’s grace.
