Hartlepools United can give themselves a pat on the back upon their success in signing Jack Shield, the amateur centre-half from Sacriston. The club had been after Shield for the past fortnight and Manchester City, Sunderland and Darlington were also anxious to secure his signature.
One club offered him professional terms for his season and next as well, but he preferred to throw in his lot with ‘Pools.
Shield, who is a student at Bede College, is a big lad with a big reputation in junior football. He is 18½ years old, 5ft 11ins in height and weighs 12 stones. He is to assist Sacriston in a cup semi-final next Saturday and will probably make his debut for Pools the following week.
