Match: Friendly at Anfield, kick-off: 15:00.
Liverpool – South Africa XI 3-2.
Attendance: 7,490.
Liverpool (2-3-5): Russell Crossley; Bill Jones, Ray Lambert; Roy Saunders, Fred Tomley, Joe Maloney; Brian Jackson, Kevin Baron, Louis Bimpson, Tony Rowley, Alan A’Court.
South Africa (2-3-5): Aubrey Tyrell; Claessens, +9.
The goals: 0-1 Claessens (4 min.), 0-2 Claessens (12 min.), 1-2 Rowley, 2-2 Bimpson, 3-2 Baron.
Aubrey Tyrell, the tall, twenty-five-year-old goalkeeper from the Transvaal, won an ovation all for himself at Anfield yesterday after a really magnificent display against Liverpool’s eager, quick shooting forwards.
It was unfortunate that Liverpool’s first goal, by Rowley, should have occurred through Tyrell’s failure to dispose of an overhead kick. But he had no chance with the others, scored by Bimpson and Baron.
The long-striding Claassens scored both the Tourist’s goals, the first in four minutes and the second in twelve.
