Season preview 1911-12: Liverpool F.C. (Athletic News)

August 28, 1911
The Anfield club, who have thirty-one players on their wage-list, should be able to place a strong eleven on the field to represent them in their League engagements. They have dispensed with few of their experienced men, and the abilities of the new-comers will bear the strictest investigation.

Comparing the arrivals with the departures, it will, I think, be generally admitted that the changes made will tend towards greater efficiency in every direction. Gus Beeby, who has been understudy to Sam Hardy, has gone to Manchester City, but in his place comes Kenneth Campbell, from Cambuslang Rangers, with satisfactory credentials. Of the full-backs, Alf West has returned to Nottingham, and the veteran Billy Dunlop has been appointed trainer at Sunderland.

The acquisition of Robert Pursell from Queens Park should, however, leave a balance on the right side in this department, according to good judges on both sides of the Border. Pursell certainly looks like a footballer.

Coming to the half-backs, the departures include James Bradley, who has gone to Reading, and the two local players Barney Dillon and Sam Hignett. Another local – Ralph Holden – has been retained, while Harry Lowe, a sturdy half-back from Gainsborough has been secured. James Scott and Donald Mackinlay, who came to Anfield last winter, will be afforded further chances of showing their worth.

To the forward division must be added Henry Beveridge, a centre from Ardrossan Celtic, John Bovill, in inside player from Chesterfield, and David Macdonald, a younger brother of the outside left who made such a successful first appearance two years ago. These are the chief changes made, and in the revised ranks it would appear that the directors have really capable talent at their disposal.

The defence will assuredly benefit by the presence of Pursell, and if the speed and weight of the attackers be augmented by an equal leaven of craft, then Liverpool should enjoy a season of plenty.

The club now possesses one of the most compact and best equipped enclosures in the country, and it is difficult to see where improvement could be effected.

Two months ago a change was rendered necessary on the directorate, owing to the resignation of Mr. John Fare, and the vacancy was filled by the appointment, who, in his prime, was a dangerous centre-forward, and played for Everton in this position.

The prospects of Liverpool certainly seem bright, but September will test the real worth of the club’s resources, for there are six League matches to decide that month, four of which are away from home.
