The formation of Motherwell Football Club


Monday, May 17 – 1886
A splendid general meeting under the auspices of the Alpha Football Club was held in Mrs. Baillie’s, Merry Street, last Monday evening.

Mr. John Anderson occupied the chair.

The chairman having intimated that the meeting was called for the purpose of starting a new club, as it had been agreed at a former meeting of the Alpha to break up and start henceforth as a new organisation with new office-bearers, constitution of rules, &c.

The following office-bearers were elected in the new club, which shall be henceforth known as the “Motherwell Football Club:” – President, Mr. James P. Wilson; vice-president, Mr. Alexander Kemp; treasurer, Mr. Andrew McKillop; secretary, Mr. J.S. Ferguson, Motherwell Ironworks; captain of first XI, W. Moodie; vice-captain, J. Anderson; captain of second XI, D. Lockhart; vice-captain, T. Binner.

The club play their first match on the Roman Road Grounds to-day, the Hamilton Academicals paying them a friendly visit. The following team will represent Motherwell: – Goal, W. Sneddon; backs, James Murray and David Kemp; half-backs, John Anderson and Andrew McKillop; forwards – left wing, Thomas Thomson and Alex Kemp; right wing, W. Moodie and C. Charters; centre, J. McPherson and N. McMaster.
