The Liverpool vacancy

January 15, 1892
Consequent on the death of Mr. Whitley, the Conservative member for the Everton Division of Liverpool, a vacant occurs, which the Liberal Party will contest. Some time once Mr. Ellis Griffiths was nominated by the Liberals as a contestant for the seat at the General Election against Mr. Whitley. He will now fight the by-election. The Conservatives are not prepared with a candidate owing to Mr. Whitley’s sudden demise; but the name of Mr. R.W. Leyland, a local Conservative and shipowner, has been mentioned as that of the probable candidate.
