The prestige gained last season by this club as champions of the Midland Counties League will, it is anticipated, be enhanced during the coming season. The team has been strengthened, and the following players engaged: – Arthur Wharton (goal), Harry Thickett, Rose (Bootle), Turner (full backs), Barr (Walsall), Charlie Leatherbarrow (Northwich Victoria), Brown (Liverpool), and the old hands – Pye, Ted Cross and Rodgers – are available as half backs.
The right wing will be safe in the charge of Longden and Edward Cutts. The left wing will see a new player in Pickering, late of Northwich Victoria, who is said to be one of the finest outside lefts in the country, together with McCormick or Herrod. The centre-forward will be the same as at the latter end of last year, Bob Leather.
The ground at Clifton Grove has been undergoing alterations for several months, and the levelling and other arrangements reflect great credit on the committee. The second team will be strengthened by the addition of several of last year’s first team, and confidently look forward to their making a name during next season.
The club players are now practising twice a week a Clifton Park, their engagement being on September 1st, when they proceed to Liverpool, to open the ground of the new Liverpool Club. The club house will in all probability be held in future at the Three Cranes. Pickering, mine host, being the outside left forward.
