So firm is the hold which football has upon no small proportion of the public that surprise is strong that the game had not long ago been made the basis of a play of the melodramatic order. Such, however, is not in existence, Mr. George Gray having written a piece which bears the title of “The Football King,” and of which the hero is Robert Stanley, the captain of the Rovers’ club, a part which is to be enacted by Mr. Hugh Montgommery, while the heroine will have as her representative in Messrs. Humphries and Barr’ Company at the Rotunda Theatre this week, Miss Isabel Innes. In the course of the piece the final for the English Cup will be seen on the stage. (Liverpool Mercury, 08-03-1897)
