Tuesday, November 3 – 1903
On Tuesday, Alf West, the right back of the Barnsley Club was formally transferred to the Liverpool Club, at a fee which, though not officially stated, is understood to be heavy. West came to Barnsley two years ago from Ilkeston. At once it was seen that he was a footballer of more than average ability, and it is known that several big clubs have been anxious to secure his signature. Small Heath made an offer for him along with Green, but it was not accepted. Since then the news of his transfer somewhere has been hourly expected. West, who is not yet 22 years of age, is a native of Nottingham. He is a tee-toller, practically a non-smoker, and was the first favourite at Oakwell. A testimonial is to be given him by his admirers.
