Some startling figures were given yesterday at a meeting of the health Committee of the Liverpool Corporation. Alderman Grant stated that in some insanitary areas in the city the death-rate was as high as 83 per 1,000 per annum while in others it reached 63 per 1,000. In view of this terrible mortality, he suggested that the Health Committee should take steps to close all insanitary court dwellings instead of waiting until the Housing Committee felt disposed to deal with the matter. Dr Hope, Medical Officer of Health, admitted that the facts were as stated, remarking that the insanitary property, which was the cause of the excessive mortality, was an unfortunate legacy of bygone years. The City Council, however, were carrying out a policy by which they would, within a fairly short time, rid the city of all these unhealthy dwellings. The Housing Committee were grappling manfully with the difficulty. (Evening Telegraph, 15-01-1904)
