As some misunderstanding may have prevailed concerning the alleged refusal of the Manchester United players to turn out near the conclusion of the Lancashire Cup-tie with Liverpool at Anfield on Monday, it may be as well to give a United official’s version of the affair.
It appears that the visiting players, having retired along with their opponents once or twice through the severity of the storm, were under the impression that the game would be abandoned, and they, consequently, stripped and entered the baths. They had no idea that the Liverpool men were going out again.
While the men were in the water they were told that Liverpool had donned dry clothes and gone into the field again. The referee, according to the Manchester official, did not order the United team out. There was a little demonstration against the visitors on the part of some of the spectators, who did not understand the situation; but the police prevented any serious disturbance.
The United are, it is said, prepared to allow Liverpool the tie, for on the play they thoroughly deserved it. Schofield and Buckley broke down badly.
