Sunday, May 2 – 1909
A veteran journalist, and one of the best known men in the football world, Mr William Fairhurst, editor of the “Cricket and Football Field” and sub-editor of the “Bolton Evening News,” passed away yesterday morning after a very brief illness, aged sixty two, at his residence near Bolton. He edited the above named pioneer or Saturday football papers from its foundation in 1884. His football reputation was established long previously with Major Sudell. He originated the British Football Association, which preceded the present Association, and refereed many matches in England and Scotland in the early eighties. He was at business on Tuesday last. An internal trouble caused death.
