Troubles for Everton and Liverpool

Tuesday, November 15 – 1910
The play in Liverpool on the whole has been of a most moderate description this season, and really one wonders how the “gates” are to keep up to the standard required if a rapid improvement is not forthcoming in the quality of the football served up for the keen and enthusiastic spectator of the Mersey district.

It must be quite a long time since we had such a run of moderate displays, and truly both Everton and Liverpool are experiencing a most uncomfortable time. It is quality of the play which is creating uneasiness, for enthusiasts do not mind their team being beaten by a good side. But when the players give moderate displays – even when they win – it is not encouraging for the future.

But what is to be done? That is the question. Get first-class players, many will reply, but there is a difficulty. Clubs are not anxious to part with good men these days, and, again, such big fees are placed on “stars” that it is questionable whether any player is worth the big fees demanded. However, the fact remains that Everton and Liverpool must do something if they intend to make headway.

Somehow the forwards are not able to force home the attack, and it is remarkable to find a side of the calibre of Everton failing in front of goal as they do. The “Blues” have not scored more than two goals in a match so far this season, which is indeed extraordinary when we remember the scoring ability of the old days.

Compared with last season, Liverpool have fallen off considerably. I find that the “Reds” at this time last season claimed 17 points for 12 matches, and now their record is 9 points from 12 games. It is indeed remarkable how a side so quickly falls from the highest standard of form. As far as points are concerned the “Blues” are comparatively better off than last season. Compared with 13 points for 12 matches to date, the toffee men claimed 15 points for 14 games last season.

Let us hope that the teams will find their feet before December dawns.
