Footballer injured at the Dardanelles

September 2, 1915
Tom Pennington, in charge of the bugle band with the 1/7th Battalion R.W.F. at the Dardanelles, has been wounded. Pennington was a goalkeeper of some distinction, and had played for Newtown, Welshpool, Whitchurch, Saltney, Reading, and Oldham Athletic.

He was also a member of the Montgomeryshire County Cricket Eleven, and in a letter to a fellow member says: –

“I have had a short innings, and not many runs. I have had a few overs, some of wich maybe have caused some trouble, but I managed to stop one with my left leg, and the Sultan gave me out l.b.w.

“I don’t know the bowler’s name, but it did the trick, and by the sting I should think it was a fast rising ball. It went straight through, but I hope no one else was in the way. The wickets out here are very poor, and the black sods are very treacherous.”
