It has been stated that the Chancellor of the Exchequer is likely, in his next Budget, to levy a tax on all amusements, under which heading football matches would be included.
Mr. J.C. Clegg, the chairman of the Football Association writes: –
“If a tax upon amusements and sports is justifiable, I feel sure that the football public will be prepared to pay its share.”
Mr. D.B. Woolfall, the honorary treasurer of the F.A., writes: –
“Why not? These times are exceptional and exceptional methods and necessities have to be taxed and I should tax luxuries before necessities.”
