Dishonestly drinking…

March 1, 1916
If you can’t get drink honestly, get it dishonestly. This seems to be the guiding principle of certain transport workers – dock labourers, carters, &c., who have lately fallen into the clutches of the police for broaching cargo at the docks and purloining whiskey and stout.

Thefts of this kind have become much more frequent recently than was the case prior to the tightening up of the licensing regulations.

Yesterday several men were sent to gaol by the Stipendiary Magistrate for obtaining possession of intoxicants in this way. One man was discovered lying drunk and incapable in the forehatch of a steamer, with several empty bottles of stout – stolen gods – alongside him.
