I have come across a number of players of worth who have been handicapped (editor input, through war service). Garratt, the Crystal Palace and Villa forward, had but one eye. Oldham Athletic have a deaf and dumb player, and poor Jack Tosswill, who died after joining the Army (his death was not due to action in the field), was very deaf, and oftimes would career off and score a brilliant goal, only to find that some seconds before the game had been checked for offside or a foul.
