“I am in Salonika, or, to be more correct, in Macedonia, for, as a matter of fact, we are some considerable distance from that somewhat ancient, certainly benighted city, the exact spot, owing to Army rules and regulations, I am not at liberty to disclose beyond saying “somewhere in” ‘Fat’ Get me?
“Well, old sport, how are things in the football world at home? Occasionally, very occasionally, I might say, we manage to get hold of a paper containing a bit of football news (the last one I saw was two days ago, dated September 9, and I leave it to your excellent imagination as to how that paper got passed round. I was glad to see Oldham, Liverpool, and Everton had all made a good start, but as the paper did not give the teams, I do not know which of the old players I assisting the various clubs.
“It would be like a breath of home to see the good old “Echo” again.
“Do you happen to have a sports handbook by you? I would be obliged if you could send me one out – one containing FA Rules, I mean – it would prove most useful to us.”
