Liverpool likely to lose leadership

March 11, 1918
The struggle between Liverpool and Stoke, that, as events have fallen out, is to decide which of the twain will finish on top of the Lancashire section, has ended in favour of the Potters, for after drawing at Anfield the previous week, they defeated their rivals on Saturday, and thus gained a lead that provided they beat Burnley twice and Rochdale at home, as they should, will serve its purpose.

The Victoria ground was packed out long before the start, 24,000 people paying £1,115 to witness a game in which Liverpool paid a heavy penalty for their sins of omission in the first half, during which they should have made the issue safe.

Stoke were a much stronger side after the interval, and a great goal by the veteran Arthur Bridgett turned the scale in their favour.
