The Liverpool Football Club yesterday refused permission for their English League match with Newcastle United on February 26th to be broadcast by the B.B.C. The decision was made by the directors after a long discussion on the principle of broadcasting league matches.
The refusal of the application, it is understood, does not necessarily bind the club’s future policy on the matter. Mr. G. S. Paterson, secretary of the club, stated that the B.B.C. desired a decision on their application yesterday to enable them to make the necessary preparations in the event of acceptance. The refusal was given because the club did not feel disposed to be placed in the position of creating a league precedent.
“At the moment we do not feel disposed to allow it,” added Mr. Patterson. “We wish to make further inquiries and consider the question more thoroughly, and as an immediate decision was requested we did not feel that we could give permission.”
The Football League are considering broadcasting in relation to football matches, but this is the first time a club has taken this action.
