Now for the week-ends fairy tale; and it happens to be true. It’s about Jimmy Hanley, coloured Liverpool lad.
Jimmy used to play for Skelmersdale, in the Liverpool County League. When he wasn’t playing you could always find him among the “bobbers” of his favourite team, Liverpool.
And one man more than any other he used to watch, the Liverpool outside left. For the whole ninety minutes the dusky skinned youngster would absorb himself in the tricks and capers of the wingman.
The name of the player… Alf Hanson, and no one was more disappointed than Jimmy when Alf came down south to join Chelsea.
But, unknown to Hanley, his own playing ability had been weighed up. Before he could realise it he, too, was booked for a trip … yes … to Chelsea.
