Death of former Burnley footballer

Thursday, February 9 – 1939
Burnley sportsmen, particularly the older generation will regret to death in the Municipal Hospital, last Thursday, of Mr. William Bury, a former member of the Burnley F.C. playing staff.

Mr. Bury, who had resided at 119, Westgate, was a stylish full-back, and rendered great service to the Turf Moor club. He was associated with Burnley at the same time as Sandy Lang and Billy McFetridge, and in the words of one who has followed the fortunes of the club for the past 55 years, “he was peerless and had had few equals in the game.”

Mr. Bury came to Burnley from Padiham in the 1886-7 season, and his first game was against Bolton Wanderers. He stayed with Burnley until the 1891-2 season. He was the possessor of two County caps, four gold medals and a Lancashire Cup medal.

Mr. Bury, who was a retired loomer, was 74 years of age. He is survived by his wife, five sons and a daughter.

The interment will take place at Wheatley-lane this (Saturday) morning.

Members of Dale-street Working Men’s Club, with which Mr. Bury had a long connection, will act as bearers.
