Arthur Riley for Dirk Kemp

September 21, 1939
Liverpool F.C. have a late change for their match against Bolton Wanderers, at Anfield, on Saturday (kick-off 3.15). Kemp has been troubled by a boil on his hand, and although it is not serious it is sufficiently harmful to keep him out of the match.

Arthur Riley, who lost his place to Kemp through the dislocation of a finger in an earlier game, is thus almost certain to be in goal for what will be the first match at Anfield since the war began.

Most of the Bolton side are serving in the Army, and it will be a real football battle between sides whose players are, strictly speaking “on active service.”

Kemp has been treated for his hand injury in Alder Hey – normally a children’s hospital.
