Novelty by Frank Swift

Saturday, June 1 – 1940
I was chatting with Messrs. George Kay and George Patterson, of Liverpool FC, during the week, and they asked: “Have you ever seen a goalkeeper take a throw in?”

I replied, “No.” Neither had they seen it until Wednesday night, when, at Anfield, Frank Swift, “guest goalkeeper” from Manchester City, took a throw-in. Frank was out by the corner flag and the ball ran to touch. He took a quick throw in to a colleague and ran back to the penalty area there to take the “return” and complete the clearance.

I saw my first League game in 1908 – Exeter City v. Bristol Rovers was the match – and have seen thousands of matches since, but this is the first case I have ever known of a goalkeeper taking a throw-in. And I have not yet met anyone who has seen or heard of a similar instance.
