To Liverpool falls the distinction of winning the Merseyside clubs race in the Western Regional competition. In addition they become runners-up to the champions Stoke City, in the Western Region, pipping Everton by one point for the position.
Of the Third Division clubs in the Western Region, Wrexham fared best finishing sixth. New Brighton were seventh, Chester ninth, Crewe Alexandra tenth, and Tranmere Rovers last.
Liverpool are deserving of a word of congratulation. Throughout the season they have experienced team difficulties owing to so many of their players being with the Services. Recently they have been forced to call in “outside players” in order to fulfil engagements.
I should like to pay tribute to the manner in which the young players of Liverpool and Everton – all the Merseyside area clubs for that matter – have risen to the occasion.
It augurs well for the future. The discovery of the season has been 17 year old Billy Liddell, the Liverpool winger. I have not seen a more promising player with any side.
