Berry Nieuwenhuys, Liverpool’s South African centre-forward; is now playing regularly with West Ham United in the London War League.
Recently Berry was promoted to Flight Sergeant in the Royal Air Force.
I have had a letter from him in which he expressed regret that he was unable to stay in Liverpool to play in the Reds’ opening game.
“I was recalled to my headquarters,” he writes, “and when I got there it was to be told I had been promoted, so I must not grumble.
“I was unable to play in the all-British cricket eleven for which I was selected. I had already promised to play for West Ham and I could not let them down.
“It is a pity I cannot turn out regularly for the old Reds, but I am hoping to be in the district soon and so will be able to have at least one game.
“Please give my very best wishes to all my friends on Merseyside.”
