Cyril Done’s comeback

Tuesday, October 18 – 1943
I must refer to the magnificent “come-back” of Cyril Done, the local born Liverpool forward, who is playing better at the present juncture than at any time in his career. There is an interesting story behind it.

Some weeks ago Cyril suffered an unaccountable loss of form, and Mr. Kay had a chat with him. Done, as a matter of fact, lost his place to Arthur Shepherd. In the chat with Mr. Kay, Cyril mentioned that his work entailed a lot of cycling.

Mr. Kay expressed the view that this was slowing up Done, and suggested that Cyril should do more walking and also put in some extra spells of training at Anfield. Done needed no further hint. He did a lot of walking, and regularly went to the ground so that in a couple of weeks he had “sharpened up,” and as the Everton folk will testify, he has come right back to the form which brought him so many goals in the last two season.

I can also tell you that Harry Kaye, the young half-back was doubtful for the second “Derby” game right up to the last minute. Kaye had been troubled by a knee injury during the week, but went to the ground in the evenings for treatment, and it was not until just before the game with Everton that he had a final try-out and was found to be fit.
