The death of Richard Thornber


June 17, 1944
Sub-Lieutenant, Richard Thornber, R.N., who lost his life during Allied landing operations, was a native of Darwen. In 1939 he joined Liverpool City Police and while serving in the force was awarded the Royal Humane Society’s medal for stopping a runaway horse.

He played football for Darwen, Burnley and Liverpool “A” team before joining the police.
