All set for Dens Park

August 4, 1944
Stage is now set for the opening game at Dens Park tomorrow afternoon between Dundee and the British Army XI. Dundee have completed their defence by signing a goalkeeper, Bennett, from Hull City, and a selection will be made from: – Bennett, Ancell, Rennie or A.N. Other, Woodburn (Newcastle), Gray (Morton), Cox (Third Lanark), McCall (Nottingham Forest), Collins (Sunderland), Hill, Jones, Turnbull, Anderson, Auld, Miller (Partick Thistle).

Major Sloan tells me the Army team will be practically as published earlier in the week. Only notable absentee will be Billy Strauss (Aberdeen), who has been called away on short notice. His place will be taken by Gunner Kurz, an outside right who has played for Chelsea.

The side therefore will be: – Swift (Manchester City), Winter (Bolton), Taylor (Wolves) or Barnes (Arsenal), Mercer (Everton), Carabine (Third Lanark), Busby (Liverpool), Kurz (Grimsby and Chelsea), Macaulay (West Ham), Welsh Charlton), Black (Hearts), Mullen (Wolves).

The Army players will wear red shirts, blue pants and red stockings, a distinct contrast to the Dundee colours, blue shirts.
