Jack Smith, the Manchester United centre-forward who played so well for Liverpool against Everton in the two “Derby” games and who got the only goals scored, will play against Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday! This is the main team flash from Manchester.
It is probable that Smith would still have been allowed to play with the Anfield club but for the fact that Liverpool entertain the United here on Saturday. One cannot blame Manchester for refusing to allow one of their own players to play against them.
As a result, Liverpool have to find another centre-forward and choice has, wisely, fallen on Don Welsh, the English international. In the inside positions will be Phil Taylor and Jack Balmer – the last named back from international duty – and this will enable the Reds to employ as much as fancy demands the old switch between the three inside forwards to upset the United defence.
Berry Nieuwenhuys will be outside right and manager Mr. George Kay is hoping that Welsh international Cumner will return to outside left. If Cumner cannot play, George Paterson, the Scot, will be there. The defence remains unchanged, with Jimmy McInnes again operating at right half in front of Jim Harley, and Alf Hobson once more in goal.
Liverpool (from): Alf Hobson, Jim Harley, Jeff Gulliver, Jimmy McInnes, Laurie Hughes, Jack Pilling, Berry Nieuwenhuys, Phil Taylor, Don Welsh, Jack Balmer, Horace Cumner, George Paterson.
