Orphanage to close

July 18, 1956
St. Edward’s Roman Catholic Orphanage, Broadgreen, Liverpool, is to close by the end of September. The new Home Office policy is not to have large numbers of children in orphanages, but to board out as many of them as possible with families.

The process of closing has been gradual, and there are now only about 40 boys left at Broadgreen.

St. Edward’s College was famed for its band, which used to entertain thousands at the Everton and Liverpool football grounds.
