In a game highlighted by Alun Evans, who scored all four Liverpool goals, South Liverpool’s exhibition game against a Liverpool XI last night got off to a sensational start when the home side took the lead in the first minute from a free-kick from Dave Watson.
This early encouragement brought the best out of South but subsequently the Reds took authority and revealed some skilful midfield play before Alun Evans cracked in a brace three minutes before the interval.
The Liverpool inside right was twice foiled of his hat-trick with superb saves by Jones within 10 minutes of the restart but at 65 minutes Alec Lindsay surged upfield and pinpointed a pass to Evans who shrugged off a challenge by Gerry Keegan and slammed the ball out of reach of Jones.
He then went on to complete the scoring with a gem of a goal at 80 minutes.
The official switch-on of the new floodlight was performed by Miss South Liverpool in the unavoidable absence of Liverpool’s Ron Yeats.
