Liverpool’s youth squad left Amsterdam today with their ears ringing with the praises of Ajax host club in the weekend tournament which saw the young Reds finish third.
An Ajax spokesman said: “Liverpool helped to make the tourney worthwhile. It would have been terrible had only Dutch clubs been left to compete the final stages. The ideal would have been an Ajax – Liverpool final.”
As it was, Liverpool drew 1-1 against Anderlect, 0-0 against Ajax, beat Blauwit on penalty kicks, after a 1-1 draw in normal time and rounded off by beating Go Ahead 2-0 in the play-off for third and fourth place.
Against Blauwit, a free-kick goal from Denis Walsh earned them an equaliser, and they scored five penalties to Blauwit’s four.
John Waddington and Doug Armstrong scored the goals which sank Go Ahead.
