Anfield ‘cash genius’ dies
A key man in the fortunes of Liverpool Football Club died at the weekend. Mr. Eric Sawyer, of Caldy, was, in the words of former boss Bill Shankly, “a financial genius.”
Mr. Sawyer, who was 75 was also an important figure at Littlewoods Mail Order Stores. He joined the company in 1939and retired as managing director 30 years later.
He became a director of Liverpool F.C. in the early sixties. “He was a very important man at Liverpool,” said Mr. Shankly. Far from backing away from buying players, he did the opposite.”
