Kevin Keegan was presented with a magnificent international Sword of Honour yesterday and, in a remarkable gesture, promptly gave it back to Bill Shankly. Shankly, long-time mentor of Keegan’s at Liverpool, was asked by Souvenir Press to present their International Football Book sword to Keegan.
Shankly said: “Where I was brought up, we were told swords were only for warriors and kings. This one is for the a king. Kevin Keegan. The most successful footballer ever to play in England.”
Keegan said: “This is the most handsome gift I’ve ever received … but I’m giving it back to Bill to show my thanks for everything he helped me achieve.”
