Liverpool midfielder Steve Nicol was ruled out of Scotland’s World Cup plans last night after having an operation on a groin injury. His Anfield colleague Ronnie Whelan is in plaster for 10 days with instep ligament damage, but expects to be fit for the Republic of Ireland’s challenge.
