Teenage prodigy Jamie Redknapp yesterday completed a dream move to Liverpool . . . helped by a friendship forged before he was born.
“I’m so excited I can’t wait to get started,” bubbled the 17-year-old as he prepared for his first training stint.
Liverpool have initially paid £350,000 for the central midfielder who joins the champions after just 14 senior starts for Bournemouth. And with top-up payments that could soar to £600,000 – a record for a player his age.
Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish revealed the deal was helped along by a friendship with Redknapp’s father Harry, the Bournemouth boss, dating back almost 25 years.
“I first met Harry when I was a 15-year-old trialist at West Ham and a friendship is never a hindrance,” he said.
In a separate £150,000 deal, centre back Alex Watson moves to Bournemouth.
