A month of hard labour awaits John Lyden

April 2, 1898
At Bolton Police Court on Saturday, John Lyden, professional footballer for Chorley, and for whose transfer last season from Bolton Wanderers the Wolverhampton Wanderers paid £100, was sent to gaol for a month’s hard labour for assaulting the police, the offence being of a savage character.

Lyden half hoped to escape with a fine, in order to play against New Brighton in the Lancashire League on Saturday, but the magistrates’ decision put this out of the question.

** Lyden played a few friendly matches for Liverpool during the 1894/95 season.
