At Bolton Police Court on Saturday, John Lyden, professional footballer for Chorley, and for whose transfer last season from Bolton Wanderers the Wolverhampton Wanderers paid £100, was sent to gaol for a month’s hard labour for assaulting the police, the offence being of a savage character.
Lyden half hoped to escape with a fine, in order to play against New Brighton in the Lancashire League on Saturday, but the magistrates’ decision put this out of the question.
