There was a very leisurely air about the encounter between Manchester United and Liverpool at Old Trafford, on Saturday, and though the game was occasionally enlivened by flashes of individual merit, the contest generally was distinctly on the tame side. To tell the truth, neither team did itself anything like justice, and a goalless ninety minutes was perhaps the most fitting reflex of a pleasantly-placid performance.
Robert Waine, in spite of his lack of inches, was the most prominent Anfield forward in the opening half, and proved himself a veritable glutton for work. Tommy Cunliffe, too, played, excellently at times. Fred Pagnam was so closely held that he could never get through, though he tried desperately hard on more than one occasion. The halves all gave a good account of themselves. John Bamber shows a coming-on disposition that is most promising, and Donald Mackinlay stuck to his guns gamely after he sustained a damaged ankle. Both backs were thoroughly sound.
