With regard to Liverpool’s recent fine run of defensive successes, a parallel sequence is to be found in looking up the record pages of the progressive Anfield-road club. Here are the figures of the club to date for 1916-17: –
| Goals | Goals | ||||||
| Sep | 2 | H | Liverpool | 3 | – | Bolton Wanderers | 1 |
| “ | 9 | A | Liverpool | 0 | – | Burslem Port Vale | 0 |
| “ | 16 | H | Liverpool | 2 | – | Oldham Athletic | 0 |
| “ | 23 | A | Liverpool | 1 | – | Preston North End | 0 |
| “ | 30 | H | Liverpool | 0 | – | Burnley | 0 |
| Oct | 7 | A | Liverpool | 0 | – | Manchester United | 0 |
| “ | 14 | A | Liverpool | 1 | – | Blackpool | 0 |
If we turn to the mid-season of 1898-99 the following splendid defensive sequence was commenced on Boxing Day: –
| Goals | Goals | ||||||
| Dec | 26 | A | Liverpool | 1 | – | West Brom. A. | 0 |
| “ | 27 | A | Liverpool | 1 | – | Notts County | 1 |
| “ | 31 | A | Liverpool | 3 | – | Sheffield Wednesday | 0 |
| Jan | 2 | A | Liverpool | 2 | – | Sheffield United | 0 |
| “ | 7 | H | Liverpool | 0 | – | Sunderland | 0 |
| “ | 14 | A | Liverpool | 0 | – | Wolverhampton | 0 |
| “ | 21 | H | Liverpool | 2 | – | Everton | 0 |
Thus, as now, Liverpool were only debited with the odd goal in seven successive fixtures. They even went to February 18 in League fixtures alone that year, dropping not a goal in seven successive League fixtures. Will that record be beaten this week end, we wonder?
