£330 in fines – 10 tons of sugar confiscated
At Liverpool yesterday, fines totaling £330 were imposed on the British Workman’s Public House Company (Limited) and their managing director, Mr. Henry Porter, and 10 tons of sugar were ordered to be confiscated, for a contravention of the Sugar Regulations.
Under the scheme of allocation for sugar, the defendants filled in form stating they had 10 cwts. of sugar in a factory and 11 cwts. in shops. Search revealed 14 tons. Defendants had catering arrangements for Everton and Liverpool football grounds, and though the local Food Committee refused sugar for those grounds the company sent 100 lb. weekly.
