Liverpool’s Sweden tour will be easy

May 6, 1939
Liverpool are one of the few sides whose summer tour has not been interfered with by the international situation. The players are looking forward to their trip to Sweden, particularly because the standard of football is not so high as to make all the matches stiff ones. It is no use prolonging the English season with hard matches against Continental sides, and Liverpool’s choice of Sweden has been a happy one in more ways than one, since they will be out of the danger zone and they have an easy programme.

The last tour undertaken by the club was to Yugoslavia and the Balkan regions, and this was extended to such lengths that everyone was glad to be back. I believe that the skip containing the players’ kit was sent back by boat and that it took so long to return it was mildewed beyond repair when it finally arrived at Anfield.

Some of the games were tougher than any English League match is allowed to become, and I gather that in some quarters the tour was looked upon as something that should not be repeated.
