Liverpool were always fighting an uphill battle against the Swedish international side at Malmo, but much of their forward work delighted. The weakness was in defence.
Within three minutes of the start Andersson gave the Swedes he lead, but Balmer equalised with a 20-yards shot. Martinsson put the home team ahead before half-time.
Within three minutes of the restart Grahn increased the lead from a penalty, but Van den Berg reduced the margin after a Niewenhuys shot had been partially cleared. Martinsson replied for the Swedes before Taylor scored a good goal for the Reds, and later Martinsson claimed his third goal, while Fagan scored for the Reds from a penalty.
It was a fine game.
Liverpool: Arthur Riley, Tommy Cooper, Jim Harley, Matt Busby, Fred Rogers, Jimmy McInnes, Berry Nieuwenhuys, Phil Taylor, Willie Fagan, Jack Balmer, Herman Van den Berg.
