A Liverpool football enthusiast
The Rev. C.A. Carter, former vicar of St. Titus’s Church, Liverpool, has died in his ninetieth year at his residence, 41 Tynwald Hill, Stoneycroft. He retired from active work in 1918.
Mr. Carter was originally curate at St. Mary’s, Kirkdale, ad throughout his clerical career he took a keen interest in social, educational and athletic movements. One of the founders of the Liverpool and District Football Association, he used to say that he helped to teach Everton to play football in the early 80’s.
It was due to Mr. Carter’s persistence in 1899-1901, as a member of the governing body of the Diocesan Church Schools’ Association (formed under the Voluntary Schools Act of 1897) that the teachers of Liverpool now enjoy a week’s holiday in October. He had been a judge at the Elementary School’s Athletic Festivals for over fifty years. He was the oldest (honorary) member of the National Association of Schoolmasters. Mr. Carter was a past-president and an enthusiastic member of the Yorkshire Society of Liverpool and District.
