Parading the ball

August 25, 1945
A word comes to me via Donald McCulloch, another young Rugby star; “The lads out here have not stopped talking of Liverpool F.C.’s visit to Germany – and it took place three weeks ago. It was like Wembley, but it was all free. Liverpool club created a grand impression and being first to show the lads out here ‘the ball,’ they earn great praise.”

Actually, admission was free, and the cost in the club was about £300, plus a lot of time wasted through transport arrangements being made in what gagster terms “Typical Army fashion. Anyone would have thought the Army was demobbing the Liverpool players the way they were treated!”
