The FA chiefs are furious that Liverpool are backing the return to a 22-club First Division. A League meeting at Birmingham tomorrow will rubber stamp Crystal Palace’s proposal that will increase the four divisions to a record 94 clubs.
But an FA official said: “You have to question where Liverpool’s loyalties lie. They have two club members on the FA International committee yet appear in favour of increasing the First Division – which most think could damage the England team.”
Liverpool’s Sir John Smith and Noel White both sit on the international committee but were unavailable for comment yesterday.
