At Dark Lane, before a good attendance. The field was in bad condition. Liverpool played with a stiff breeze. The play was even, Liverpool being pulled up for offside. Both sides put in some artistic work, and the home defenders used some ponderous kicking.
Harry Blears was cheered for a good attempt. The visitors right got away splendidly, but was crossed. The visitors shot badly. Rossendale missed a glorious opportunity, and then got a corner. Liverpool got away with a pretty run, but William Holden got rid again. Liverpool attacked and got a corner, and had hard lines. Duncan McLean then saved splendidly twice in succession, giving the home team a fruitless corner.
The Rossendale backs played magnificently, and the forwards at times passed beautifully. The visitors were very tricky, but could not break through, their defence being impregnable. McLean repeatedly showed up well. Holden was often cheered.
Half-time: Liverpool 0, Rossendale 0.
Immediately on resuming John Miller got possession, and made a grand run and completely beat Holden. This was a splendid bit of play. Rossendale played gamely, but their opponents were superior, and showed better football. Tremendous was the excitement as Rossendale got a clear opening, but it was mulled. Liverpool then came away, and their passing being simply perfect, the home backs were non-plussed, and Holden was beaten a second time.
After the restart Rossendale broke away, but it was no use. The visitors were now showing perfect combination, and matters were going bad with Rossendale. Play was in the Liverpool half, but was soon returned, and Holden was called upon again. The finish was fought in semi-darkness.
