A new free kick tactic

September 23, 1899
A new style of taking free kicks within, say, twenty yards of goal is becoming common. The captain of the defending side orders all his men, except the goalkeeper and one back, to come out of goal, and thus places the attacking party offside. It may be well for both players and officials to remember that, providing a player is onside at the moment the kick is taken, he is at liberty to rush forward and try to get at the ball before the pair of defenders, when he would be onside. This can often be accomplished if the kicker will lift the ball well up.
