Atherton Church v Liverpool Reserves.
Atherton have been particularly severe upon the leading teams in the Lancashire Combination this season, and the defeat they administered to Liverpool Reserves, though only by the odd goal, will probably mean the losing of the championship to the Anfielders. On the Flapper Fold enclosure the Athertonians are very redoubtable foe men, and few teams have come away with more than when they came.
The clever Liverpool combination more than found their hands full, and had it not been for the brilliant defence of Ned Doig and his backs. Atherton would have won by a much larger margin. The veteran custodian kept a wonderful charge, especially in the second half. Once, however, Benjamin Tonge got the ball through after striking the crossbar, but the referee disallowed the point.
Edward Leach, the ex-Boltonian, is credited with the only legitimate point of the match, his shot cannoning off Tom Chorlton, the Liverpool left back, into the net. The victorious team was:
Matt Chorley, Tom Edwards, Aaron Martinscroft, William Isherwood, Arthur Mockett, Michael Madden, Charles Farrington, Benjamin Tonge, John Williams, Joe Horrocks, Edward Leach.
